Good news came for residents of Kalyamaholo Village in Kyahi Subcounty, Gomba District, as the Ministry of Local Government Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ben Kumumanya, commissioned a shared solar scheme constructed by the Ministry of Local Government under the first phase of the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) Project.

The community had been waiting for an electricity connection, with the Ministry confirming that it would take more than five years for Kalyamaholo to be connected to the national power grid.

At the time, 47 households were connected to the solar grid; however, the system had the capacity to connect at least 200 households. This scheme provided lighting and supported businesses such as salons, carpentry, and welding, creating jobs.

Mr. Kumumanya also revealed that in the second phase of the LEGS project, districts that were then implementing the program would still be considered, alongside others. The LEGS project, which aimed to increase the incomes of rural farmers, was financed by the Islamic Development Bank, the Lives and Livelihoods Fund, and the Government of Uganda, and was implemented in 17 districts.

Under the first phase of the project, Gomba benefited from the rehabilitation of the 30.3km Kyabagamba-Kigayaza-Kyetume-Kyayi Community Access Road, the construction of Maddu market sheds, Kifampa and Kigenzi milk collection centers, artificial insemination services, the rehabilitation of Rwakibira earth dam, and three biogas demonstration sites.
