In a major boost for livestock farmers in Kumi District, the Government of Uganda commissioned the newly constructed Agule Livestock Market, bringing an end to over 15 years of operations under makeshift structures.
The market, built at a cost of UGX 428,636,830 under the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) Project, was expected to benefit more than 500 livestock traders in Agule, Omatenga, and surrounding communities. The facility included a veterinary office block, breastfeeding shelter, eatery, three-stance latrine, poultry cages, cattle crush, walkways, waste disposal unit, water troughs, a production well, reserve tank, and a solar system.

Hon. Raphael Magyezi, the Minister for Local Government, who officiated the commissioning, hailed the resilience of the Agule community and emphasized the market’s significance in strengthening local economic development.
This market is a symbol of transformation. It enhances value chains and supports livelihoods rooted in livestock,” he noted.
Kumi District had benefited significantly under LEGS, with projects including:
- The UGX 721M Kakuresi Kamaca road
- The UGX 703M Tisai Milk Collection Center
- The UGX 1.2B Kanapa Water Scheme
The project also trained 11 AI technicians, who had inseminated 227 cows, producing 75 calves for 120 farmers.
Additionally, three cooperatives received tractors worth over UGX 558M, while seven groups accessed UGX 276M through the Microfinance Support Center.

Minister Magyezi urged the district to maintain the market sustainably and applauded partners, particularly the Islamic Development Bank and Lives and Livelihoods Fund donors, for supporting rural transformation.
